Charming delft dish demonstrating how exotic the East appeared to Europe and a sense of wonder it portrayed. Unusually painted in the 'Wanli' style demonstrating the mania in Europe for Chinese porcelain. In original condition.

Painted in the Chinese 'Wanli' style. The centre painted with a large lion with a hairy mane flexing his tail and standing in front of a pavilion in a garden landscape. The rim painted with four repeats of a man sitting on a ledge with repeats of stylised flowers and foliate decoration interposed. Painted in blue on a white glaze.

Condition : nibbling around rim, one small chip at 5 o'clock which can be conserved.

Measures: diameter:30.5 cm., 12" Height 4.5 cm., 1 3/4".
