Charming naive/folk art/sculptural pair of carvings. Crisp, fluid, characterful carving. Lustrous patina. One a hunting scene in a wood near a cottage : a hunter shooting deer with a pack of five dogs, two attacking a deer and the other three in pursuit of another. The other a mystical seascape : an amorini playing a horn and fish leaping in front of a horse drawn chariot carrying a basket of fruit and DEMETER (the Olympian goddess of agriculture, grain and bread who sustained mankind with the earth's rich bounty) holding a scythe and a bushel of corn; behind another armorini playing the flute and the tail of a sea monster. The pair can be split and also can be framed. Height - 13.5cm ., 5 3/8" Length - 88.5cm., 34 3/4" Depth - 0.8cm
