A fine, late-17th century, walnut, open armchair with needlework upholstery

The rectangular, back and seat upholstered in exceptional, mid-18th century, English, gros and petit-point needlework. The needlework depicts a chinoiserie scene which reflected the height of fashion at the time and which is, much sought after, today. A lady inside a grand pavillion is greeting a friend who is attended by a female servant. A male and female servant attend nearby. Two oosely birds fly above the pavillion, and exotic animals are scampering around in front. The scene is set amidst flowerheads and trailing stems. The seat is worked in the same manner with two dragons facing each other amidst foliage, trailing stems and flowerheads. The ground is brown and the design is stitched in shades of red, blue, yellow, orange, white, and green. There is very little fading to the colours. The scroll arms, unusually, taper towards the middle from each end. The uprights, front, side and centre stretchers turned, and the back legs straight. The toes original. Excellent original colour and patina.
