Rare, mid-17th century, Tortoishell, small, cushion framed, mirror with the original plate & back, length 14 ½" height 16", depth 2½" The tortoishell is striking and was highly prized as an elite, luxurious ornamental gem for its exotic nature and beautiful patterning during this period Rare to find Baroque mirror of this cushion form in tortoishell as most were made from walnut or olivewood veneers. The cushion form enhances the aesthetic of tortoishell veneer showing its patterning to full advantage. This mirror is 2½ inches deep. The small size is characteristic of the Baroque period as glass was also expensive and only affordable by the rich. Characterful mirror with environmental wear and old repairs as to be expected from a tortoishell piece of this age.
