A fine, large, late-17th century, oak court cupboard
10010
In two sections. The top section has a plank top supported by a frieze rail decorated with stylised, scrolled carving. The two, hinged doors have stylised, geometric carving which is typical of the period and gives access to the top cupboard. There are two moulded panels with a repeat of the carved decoration in the centre, separated by carved uprights. The top section is supported at the front by bulbous turnings, again characteristic of the period. The bottom section has a top section of scrolling, carved decoration above three drawers with stylised 'S' scrolls. The two, large, panelled doors give access to the large, lower cupboard. There are moulded panels either side and the cupboard stands on stile feet. The carving is of the highest quality, deep and crisp and the colour has wonderful, mellow tones with a lustrous patina. English, third quarter of the 17th century.
