Description / Expertise
This charming lantern decorated with typical Dutch estuary scenes is a rare survival. Although they must have been made in large quantities as evidenced in many Dutch old masters their medium makes them very vulnerable. The painting on this lantern is exceptionally fine and typical of the period. The use of polychrome lifts the decoration. This lantern is very atmospheric conjuring up images of cosy interiors.

Three sides have glass panels. The door and pierced gabled 'roof' are painted in blue with estuary scenes, on a ground of diaper borders and scrolling flowers and foliage, metal latch, hinge pins and suspension loop,

Literature: Tryhorn Collection. The Tryhorn Collection consisted of predominantly 18th and 19th century European porcelain collected by the late Donald Tryhorn of Kingsbridge. The collection was highly regarded and included many fine examples of Bow, Bristol, Plymouth, Chantilly and St Cloud porcelain as well as some Oriental pieces. The collection was accumulated with almost curatorial care over a period of 30 years. Although a private man, Donald Tryhorn was a regular face in both provincial and national auction rooms. Indeed, the collection includes a number of pieces acquired from the dispersal of other major collections. He was also an active buyer from many of the most recognised dealers of 18th century porcelain. He kept at least a dozen notebooks in which he recorded and cross referenced his acquisitions and in addition recorded the details of other pieces of interest that he had come across in salerooms but was unable to purchase at the time. These note and scrapbooks were almost constantly updated and annotated when new information came to light or when he perceived a previously overlooked characteristic.
